What do the colors you wear say about you (B)?

Colors are a really important part of our lives. They are established symbols, such as traffic lights, but they also have a more subtle part their symbolism. There are colors we all perceive the same, for example everyone things of light blue as a calming color, because it’s the color of the sky, but not everyone associates red with communism. We are going to use the example of red being associated with communism to go even deeper with our analysis of colors. Red was used by the communists as their color because of previous associations we made with this color. Of course, not only this, but there’s a deeper cultural concept as well. In Russia, red is the color of beauty. The Bolsheviks used a red flag as their symbol when they overthrew the tsar in 1917. That is how red actually became the color of communism. Red is the color that draws our attention. Maybe because it’s a color that does not come across the outside of the human body (some people have red hair, but red hair is quite rare, as most people with red hair actually have orange hair) and it is striking in comparison to us. Whatever the reason, red is flash. Maybe this is why car makers use red to showcase their newest cars.

Colors also influence us. And the colors we wear influence not only us, but the others around us as well. How would it look like if a man walked in a business meeting in a bright green suit? This example only shows us that colors are a vocabulary and that we associate them with different things and ideas and that there are colors appropriate for different occasions, ages and lifestyles.

We also associate colors with the role we give them: colors like pale red or pink are considered feminine colors, while blue and green are seen as masculine colors. You can read more about this topic in our article “Clothing as Symbols“.

Think about the clothes you wore in the last 2 weeks. Of course, you might not remember everything, but you pretty much know what you have in your wardrobe. The clothes you wear definitely say something about you. What they say, we can’t tell you, as we don’t know in what combinations you wore them. However, there are a few things some people believe are reflected in colors, for example:

  • Red is said to be  a color that stands out, talking about attention, power but mostly energy!
  • Pink, on the other hand, is supposed to be a color that says “calmness” and a relaxed state of mind. Pink is also the color of innocence for many, which is why little girls always have everything in pink.
  • White is what you want to wear if you want to look clean and neat! White is said to be the color of purity.
  • Black was the official color of men’s fashion, transmitting power and seriousness. Nowadays men can wear all sorts of colors. But what remains is that black is the color of power, but not so aggressive as red.
  • Other color symbolisms are ought to be: brown being the color of security, purple- the color of spirituality and creativity, gold- achievement, orange- optimism.

But we are not big believers in this kind of symbolism. Different cultures, first of all, have different symbols for different colors, so we can’t generalize. We usually want to have clear definitions, but life is not all black and white (speaking of colors). When it comes to clothes and colors, what you want to achieve is harmony and balance. You also might want to be aware of how others see you in the context you are in. Remember the meeting example earlier.
