The Most Expensive Men’s Clothes

Have you ever wondered what the most expensive clothes in the world are? We often hear about really expensive houses or cars (recently Lamborghini launched a $3.9 Million car) but not so often about clothes. It’s next to impossible to establish which clothes are worth most, as prices change constantly and not according to objective factors. There are items that simply sell because there is a buyer and there are items that do not sell, even if there is someone charging a lot of money for them.

What makes clothes different is that there are two categories of highly expensive clothes. First, there are the clothes have a value because of their fabric, design, uniqueness and other factors. The second category are the clothes that have been sold for a lot of money for charity reasons at different auctions. For example, some of the sweaters Bill Cosby wore on “The Cosby Show” were auctioned on eBay by one of his four daughters. Bidding started at $5,000. Being a charity fund raiser, nobody actually cared about the look of the sweater or the design. As you can see in the picture, the sweater is not the most stylish thing one can think of. The sweaters were not sold, proving that just because something is expensive, it doesn’t mean there’s a billionaire out there willing to buy it. It’s sad for the charity, though.

The most expensive shoes, this time in the non-charity department are a pair of Berluti shoes inspired by Andy Warhol. Because Warhol wanted a visible patch only on his right shoe, each pair includes an additional left shoe that remains unpatched. These $1,830 shoes were soon to be pushed out of the list, when rappers and other fans of sneakers started paying enormous amounts of money on this type of shoes. The Air Jordan Silver Shoe, which is really a silver shoe, after being autographed by Michael Jordan, was sold online for $60,000. So, what does this prove?

Sometimes clothes are expensive just because they are covered in diamonds and other expensive stones. In 2003, Bollywood film star Salman Khan wore a tie made of pure silk with a pattern in 150 grams of gold. It’s also covered with 271 diamonds weighing 77 carats weighing 77 carats total. At the time, the tie was worth $220,000. Would you wear something that’s worth more than a house around your neck?

There’s no need to mention that today there are suits on the market that sell for more than $10,000, as well as other pieces that go for sums that really make you wonder “why?’. Don’t get us wrong, we love the idea of wearing something unique and of extremely high economic value, but analyzing these prices makes one wonder: “what is the occasion you are going to wear such an expensive shirt at?” Swedish shirt-making company Eton once sold a shirt which had diamonds encrusted in it’s cufflinks and studs which sold for  $45,000.

There is also a big market out there for vintage clothes. Some people go crazy for vintage, retro or grudge clothes, spending hundreds of dollars for old items, but others think of them as “used” or “worn”.  Of course, some of it is couture and will probably never lose it’s value, but there are also a lot of people who just like spending tons of money on casual, normal old clothes. So then, what is the difference between a  vintage store and a second-hand shop?

As you can see, “the most expensive clothes” is not a list than can be made properly and objectively. While a house can be evaluated and correctly priced, with clothes that is harder to do. If a Michael Jordan fan will pay $60,000 on a pair of sneakers, who says they are not worth that?

P.S. How much would you consider spending on a piece of clothing? Would you spend $60,000 on a pair of shoes? Are vintage clothes worth their money? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

This is crazy! Especially spending that much money on shoes that are just going to get walked on and ruined…
