Fashion And Colorblind People (B)

Colorblindness is not a common thing today, maybe because it’s really talked

about, but there are people who are colorblind, and even though the numbers are not very high, they are significant. About 1% of women are colorblind, whereas 8% of men can’t distinguish certain colors. The most common deficiencies involve red and green colors, but the are also some people who have difficulties distinguishing blues and yellows. There are also people who can not distinguish any color.

Besides from the obvious, other problems colorblind people can have is when they are looking for a job, for example it would be next to impossible for a colorblind person to be an electrician as they would not be able to distinguish between differently colored wires.

Another thing colorblind people have to deal with is putting together a wardrobe. Just because you are colorblind doesn’t mean you need to look bad.

Of course, the problem is not the cut of the clothes, but it’s how you put colors together. Some people who are colorblind choose to wear only jeans with white or dark shirts or outfits that are similar to this combination.

We have written a few instructions to how to put together an outfit and organizing your wardrobe if you are colorblind.

So, here they are:

As we said, most people with colorblindness choose to wear jeans and simple black or white clothes. We would advise you to go for more gray scale clothes, that, of course, have a good shape and cut. Because you will not place so much accent on your colors, we would advise you to place accent on the patterns. Light grey with a dark grey pattern looks really good.

We want to exemplify with a few outfits:

You can look good in an-all grey and white suit.

This Valentino outfit is all neutral: grey and grey and a white shirt. However, the lack of color compensates through the dark collar and the shape of the suit and the button-cover of the shirt.

When it comes to warmer weather, you can go to white and paler greys, like in the picture below:

Mixing whites and greys can be a good idea for the summer.

But your wardrobe doesn’t have to be all black and white: you’re not a mime.

So, here’s how you can use other colors colorblind people can use:

You can wear leather which is usually brown, which you can match up to other dark colors, like in this outfit.

But you can also wear the colors anyone else would, and here is how:

A common instruction given to colorblind people is to use iron-on labels, on which they write the name of the color of the clothing piece. If you do this, we advise you to stick the label on the inside of the piece.

This however, is not very practical, as for most colorblind people those color names don’t mean much.

Another trick you can make is to mark the items with a code number. Ask someone who is good at styling  to put coordinated outfits together, from your socks and tie to the suit coat. Write a number “1” on each item’s label, and do this for everything that goes together. Then, create different combinations with more numbers. For example, if an item has the numbers “1, 3, 5,” it coordinates with any item that has any of those numbers. This way you can create more outfits knowing the colors go together.

There are things, for example socks, that you can only buy in black, white and grey: this way you will always make sure you don’t get them mixed up.

If you wear suits, when you organize your wardrobe, you can attach each suit to the shirts it goes with. Of course, this would mean that one shirt goes only with one suit, but you could make this investment if you afford it.

In the end, we just want to close by saying two more things:

When you go shopping, bring someone with you, of course again, someone who is good at this. As a joke, we can say some people are more colorblind than colorblind people without being colorblind.

From our research, there has not yet been a collection or fashion house to make clothes for colorblind people. Maybe we should include that in our a project as well.
