15 Decorating Tips For Your Home

We always talk about this term we coined and like so much, “metafashion”. Through metafashion we mean all the things that are not fashion, but relate to style and involuntarily influence our living. Our attitude is the most important part of metafashion, but metafashion is also a lot about material things we see, feel and smell.

The place we live in is very important and we have not mentioned it so much so far on the website, but that has to change. The conditions we live in, sadly or happily, influence us a lot. Living in a space with too many things (have you ever seen that TV show “Hoarders”?) stresses us out. And it’s not the fact that there are many things (some people just like many things), but the fact that they are messed up is bad for your mood. Also, the colors of your environment influence you a lot, but we are going to break that down in another article.

Moreover, the house/apartment etc you live in tells you and the world a lot about who you are. Of course, often you can be in a “I have expensive taste and not much money” situation, but it’s not so much what you have, it’s what you do with it. Even if you are on a budget or got the furniture from your in-laws and you feel it does not represent you, the way you put your mark on the place is the thing that speaks about you. Sometimes this kind of situation communicate more about the person who lives there, compared to having someone do the place in a style you like. Just like in the case of clothes, you can use techniques to improve the overall feel of your place.

We have some tips for you. Because we want you to have your own style, we encourage you to personalize these tips. This is why we give general directions that you can choose to follow or not. And if you do, we want to leave it up to you to decide what goes with your personality and what doesn’t. For example, if we say “pillows”, it’s up to you to determine their size, shape, color, fabric, etc.  As most sites, blogs and magazines tell you how you should be, we want to encourage you to discover your own “how”.

After that, you can see some beautiful (at least for us) home decorations which can serve as inspiration for your own room/house etc.

So, here are some decorating tips you might choose to use:

1. If you live in a small place, don’t go for small-scale furniture if you want the place to look bigger. Weird as it might sound, bigger furniture makes a place look bigger. Get a high bed and a tall headboard.

2. Small rooms can be made bigger with darker walls, as strange as this might sound.

3. Use wallpaper to cover your closet doors. This will create a lot of visual interest to the people who see them and to you, of course (this goes great with sliding doors).

4. Use pillows to give a certain feel to a room. Also, adding more pillows will make the room more dynamic. If you have trouble matching them, use them in complementary colors so that they really pop out.

5. To make a bathroom more personal, use a real rug. Rugs are made to resist to more than a wet foot now and then. The type, color, size, etc of the rug is all up to you!

6. If you don’t want or like a piece, don’t use it! The decorating police will not arrest you for not having a sofa or something.

7. Have more than one source of lightning. Usually, ambient light is  for mood and direct light is for reading.

8. To have a grounded look, use skirted furniture. Skirted means that the legs of the furniture are not visible, as they are covered with a piece of cloth that continues from the fabric of the furniture’s cover.

9. A fabric that won’t need to be changed any time soon is leather. Vinyl can also do the job well.

10. Frame anything. You can frame posters, paintings, clothes, and so much more. Flat things look better framed.

11. If you have a bigger space, you can fill it with plants. Plants can make a room look more dynamic. Plants will bright up a small room too, but then we think they should be smaller, unless you want to wake up with moist windows or unable to breathe.

12. Pay attention to all the places in your living space, including the closets, which can too be lighten up, colored and decorated basically.

13. Furniture does not have to be brown. Yes, brown is the most common color out there, but you can paint it in all types of colors.

14. Have “traffic lanes”. Make it easy to go from one place to another. This might sound strange, but many people ignore this. Going from one key point to another or from one room to another must be very easy, regardless of the size and style of your house.

15. Think in advance the feel of the look and make a budget. This way, you won’t have any surprises along the way. Also, if you think about buying a more expensive piece, think about if it’s worth it or not. Buying a piece that’s a little more expensive that you will use almost every day for the next years, will probably be worth it.

Now, have a look at a few photos that can inspire you!

P.S. What tips do you use when decorating? How would you describe your style? What do you want your home to be like?

I like modern home decoration. My home decorate style is minimalist because i like to feel flow, fresh and space but for the oudside i like to feel i’m in the green garden. In the photos i like style in the last photo.

I never wanted to use rugs in the bathroom, but i guess you are right – arug should hold a few drops of water!
