Awards Season: 3 Things We’ve Learned from the Men’s Looks

The beginning of the years always brings a series of Hollywood award shows that celebrate the best TV and movies of the past year. Besides that, the award shows are also great celebrity gather-ups, where all the American stars line come together for a night of fun and fashion. Even though the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards are film and television-related events, there is always a lot of side-interest that is going on about the clothes worn by the celebrities who walk down the red carpet.

And that’s a wonderful thing for more reasons: first of all, Hollywood has always been a place that launched looks and trends and which has been associated with glamour and celebrity; and secondly, it is wonderful to see the celebrities you relate to on the red carpet: this can offer you inspiration for your next outfits and clothing purchases.

Even though the main focus is always on the dresses, which range from “what was she thinking” to “absolutely fantastic”, men get their share of fashion-attention as well. Of course, not as much, which is understandably, since most men are dressed in classic tuxedos and suits taking almost no fashion risk, but nevertheless , there are things we can learn from taking a look at the fashions worn by the guys.

Justin Theroux SAG AwardsFirst of all, despite the SAG awards being more colorful in terms of menswear than the Golden Globes, the men who attended both the two events played it really safe, and wore only classic black or white tuxedos or suits, with the occasional blue pieces and the rare exceptions to these “rules”.

There is not much that can be said about these looks in themselves: All the men looked great, which was expected, since they all wore designer clothes tailored to their sizes, so it was hard to spot a faux-pas, and everyone was very well groomed, which is a lesson we can all benefit from: if you have a beard or a mustache, you must always make sure it looks it best and is always clean and trimmed.

Given the fact that there were no “wow-looks” at these awards shows, yet everyone still looked great, there are a few things we can all learn from watching these men:

1. Classic suits go anywhere. Even though the SAG awards are somewhat different than the Golden Globes, classic suits and tuxedos go for both occasions. This is why every man must have at least one go-to suit which he can put on in any setting.

2. Tailored clothes look amazing. Move over magicians, the tailors are coming in. In today’s world, you don’t need a fairy godmother to come and make an average body look great, all it takes is a tailor. Just look at how great all the guys look: from thin to big, everyone looks amazing. The reason: good tailoring. There are a lot of men who always think that if they are too small or too big, they can’t look great in suits or other types of clothes, but that is wrong. Just look at how good Jim Parsons looks, and he is a guy with a very narrow frame.

3. It’s all about the personality. Since most of the men present at the Golden Globes and the SAG awards wore the same thing, they were still very individualized and made a lasting impression. The clothes helped, of course, but then again, everyone’s clothes looked just as great. The other reason why the men looked so memorable came from within: most of these guys have a great attitude and this shows. On Attire Club, we always say that the clothes you wear are just as important as your attitude, and these awards shows were proof of that.

Given these conclusions, there is one more than that is intensely debated is whether women have it easier than men when it comes to red carpet fashion. The truth is that men and women have it just as easy or just as hard: while for the women it is easier because they have more to choose from, this wide range of choices makes it hard to for them to pick that perfect dress. Therefore, women can go wrong more easily than men. On the other hand, men know that they are going to wear a suit, which makes it hard to personalize and wear a suit in a way that it will stand out and look different from a standard suit.

With the awards season rolling, there still a few more awards shows to come, and we will be checking out the latest red carpet looks, which are a great inspiration if you want to see a thousand ways to wear a suit.

I think men should wear really colorful stuff too – why is it only the women who do? Wouldn’t that be amazing?
