The Myths and Real Causes of Hair Loss in Men (B)

What actually causes hair loss in men?

It can be really difficult when a guy starts to lose his hair. Not only from a physical perspective but also from a confidence perspective. Despite the fact that many men, including celebrities choose to embrace hair loss, there can be a lot of uncertainty about exactly how to deal with it or embrace it. And, to make things worse, there is a lot of false information out there regarding how to deal with hair loss, and many men are under the illusion that hair loss cannot be treated. In a recent survey by LloydsPharmacy, it was discovered that 61% of men thought that hair loss can’t be treated. The truth couldn’t be more different – there are treatments out there which have shown to be effective in up to 96% of men.

The same survey found that 40% of men aged 18-34 thought that stress was a main cause of hair loss. Whilst there are some rare forms of hair loss which can indeed be caused by stress, by far the biggest cause of hair loss is genetics. That isn’t to say you shouldn’t try to avoid stress – quite the opposite, as avoiding stress is something we should all aim for. But if you do start to experience hair loss, you shouldn’t make the mistake of thinking that de-stressing is going to necessarily bring it back.

Another thing that is commonly blamed for hair loss is hats and other types of headgear.

However, this is yet another myth. But in a survey, 1 in 5 men thought that wearing a hat could cause hair loss. If you do like to wear a hat and notice hair loss, don’t believe that dumping the hat will bring your hair back.

How to find out what causes your own hair loss?

If you want to learn more about what causes your hair loss, there are a couple of things you can do:

  • Speak to your Doctor and see what advice they can give you
  • If you can’t speak to your Doctor or want to speak to someone quicker, then your local Pharmacist can often assist. However, please note that pharmacists don’t often want to take the place of a doctor. They can give you information about the products they have in their store, but you shouldn’t ask them for diagnoses or for more information than they can provide

The bottom line is that you need to speak to a professional to find out the likely cause and see what treatment options are available to you. We recommend going to different sources and see whether the answers you get are similar.

What are the real general causes of hair loss?

We’ve looked at some of the most common myths and where you can go for advice, but what about the real causes? We know that wearing a hat isn’t going to do it and stress is an unlikely cause, so what actually does?

Genetics – as mentioned earlier, genetics can play a big part in hair loss and is known as “male pattern baldness”. It can be passed on by both sides of your family and frustratingly for men, there isn’t much you can do about your genes! However there are treatments that can help including a prescription tablet called Finasteride which can be effective in up to 90% of men.

Bad diet – we should all strive to eat healthily and there are more benefits to this than just having a healthy head of hair! You should remember though that just like the rest of your body, your hair needs nutrients to stay healthy and grow; the saying “you are what you eat” applies to your hair as well.

If you experience a sudden loss in weight or low iron levels, you may find your hair starting to thin or disappear. The good news though is that this is usually a temporary thing and returning to a balanced, healthy diet with lots of iron, protein, biotin and zinc can help fix the problems.

Psoriasis – this is a condition which can sometimes be confused with dandruff. This unfortunately means that men may not realize they have a hair loss problem and potentially use the wrong treatments. If you notice that you have large white flakes in your hair, it is worth checking with your Doctor because hair follicles can become damaged. This can sometimes lead to temporary loss of hair.

There are treatments available to you including medicated shampoo which your Doctor will be able to advise you on.

And, speaking of shampoo, if you notice that your hair is strange for a while, you might want to change shampoos or other hair products you use and see if the state of your hair changes.

We have outlined a few main causes of hair loss above, if you want to learn about a couple more, we recommend taking a look at this great infographic which outlines them and offers more information on male baldness.

We know that losing your hair might be tough, but if you discover what causes it and the right treatment, you can get your mane on track with lots of patience and care.
