The Casely-Hayford Spring 2018 Menswear Collection in Review

Joe Casely-Hayford released his collection in his London annex rather than on a runway. The reason for this was because the North London label wanted people to focus more on the details that usually get lost on the runway. And it was a wise decision. The collection, which Caseley-Hayford created together with his son, Charlie, featured many beautiful design elements that made it one of the best collections of the season.

The loosely tailored, high-waist suits were one of the strongest part of the collection, as they felt very fresh and modern. One of them featured seams on the outside of the garments, which were finished off with chi chai, a Japanese overlocking microstitch. Other pieces included loose, tops, a waterproof trench coat made from a three-layer waterproof fabric. The collection was produced in Japan.

The collection was designed for a broad audience and is meant to be very time-resistant, which, in our opinion definitely is. Casely-Hayford said that “the silhouette has been developed over a long time, so it flatters a lot of body types…a lot of the best pieces will stay in one’s wardrobe for ten years.”

For the designer, the brand is slowly evolving. As former Creative Director of Gieves & Hawkes, he said that “The best brands define a very strong handwriting and signature style which their clients relate to”, continuing to explain that “I think it’s about developing the brand identity and being able to evolve from season to season in a really positive way.”

The two creators noted that big changes every six months are a thing of the past, so, for them, fashion should have a slow evolution, which makes much sense, given the vast amount of brands that is out there and the fact that many pieces are meant to stay for a long time.

Overall, the collection came as a very pleasant experience in the sense that it made regular clothes look so much unlike anything regular and it made it with enormous ease. Relying on a small color palette and many ideas, the collection brought a new meaning to casual menswear, of which we would like to see more. The pattern use mixed with color blocking and fancy shoes gave the looks a timeless charm.

Fine and smooth, but young, fresh and dynamic, the Casely-Hayford spring 2018 menswear collection was definitely one of the highlights of the season.
