Style Moments in Classic Cinema

One of the reasons we love cinema so much is because it immortalizes the fashion and the style of the time it is created in. In films, it’s always about the latest fashion, the latest trends, the latest technology, but not on the runway! Also, films that take place in a long-gone time showcase both the time’s that they present spirit and the time’s they were made in spirit.

In “The Painter of Modern. Life” (1863), Charles Baudelaire a French poet, essayist and art critic, wrote a chapter on “Beauty, Fashion and Happiness”, in which he wrote that beauty is a timeless element that is embellished with the time’s passions, fashions and moral. He said you can not have real beauty if it lacks one of these components. The Universal must go hand in hand with the Particular. Baudelaire said that these two components of fashion go hand in hand because of the duality of men: we all have both a soul and a body.

For example, Louise Brooks (featured in the photo collection) is the image of the 1920s woman. She has the looks, the thought and the attitude, but we can relate to her today as well, and her style is universal and eternal.

Clothes, according to Baudelaire, evolve like biology: they have a natural way of changing. The time a person lives in, he claimed, is seen on people’s faces, and real beauty can actually become visible as well.

This is why today we want to bring you a collection of photos of some memorable moments in classic cinema. This is just part 1, as there are so many others who must be added to the list!

P.S. What do you think? What actors/movies should make it on the next list?

Lovely post and great choices, some movies have remained classics in my eyes. I love all movies with Jean-Paul Belmondo and Audrey Hepburn.
Dusana 🙂

Ooooh, one of my favourite topics- music and fashion! I love the 60s fashion in films like Mermaids/Cher, Dirty Dancing…the mishmash sheer 90s awkwardness of Winona in Reality Bites….90s heaven as shown in CLUELESS, CLUELESS (tsigh, loooove that) I also like the effortless Western style in Footloose, the original 80s version..hmmm, oh! loove the style in Mannequin, Kim Catrall’s montages were divine, THAT red dress worn by Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman is still a classic…Richard Gere in American Gigolo…OK as you see, I can go on and on on and on and on…
