Used or classic?
Oh, classic cars. We like them, we want them and we respect them just as much as new cars. But what makes men be so crazy about cars and why is there such a big respect for old cars? In the article below, we try to find out what makes us crazy for vintage and not so vintage cars.
Classic cars are the equivalent of vintage clothing in fashion. They are used, yet worshiped. However, there are a few differences between clothes and cars, as clothes can still be worn, but you won’t see a hippie van on a highway. New cars, just like new clothes are so much better and they seem to keep getting better. So what makes classic cars so special?
We like classic cars because they represent a time we have come to idealize. People have always done this. After a time is over, sooner or later they tend to idealize it. And this is because we extract the best of an era and create a rather vague and false image of the respective time. Of course, this being said, we can not forget that some pieces are of real value: they are elegant and timeless, and fulfill our need of beauty and balance.
More than representing another time, these cars are the proof of an evolution. For example, in the 1950s, cars used to represent a good that was not such a big need as it is today. Earlier than the 1950s, cars represented wealth, as only the rich could afford them, so this also traces very clearly the history line of the democratization of goods, as now almost anyone can afford a car.
As a side note, on a more joking note, we can say that it wasn’t until the 1960s when the idea of second hand cars appeared. What must the world have looked like without used car parks?
This car has personality!
Many people refer to their car as “he” or “she”. Do you do that? Why do they do it?
In order to link cars and people and lifestyle better, we can focus on the phrase “you are what you drive”. Now, we’re not sure this is completely true, as many people drive their parents’ or their company’s cars, but let’s just focus on the people who buy a car they want. Just like in clothes, the car you own speaks volumes about your views and personality. Driving an electric car means you care about the environment, driving a smart car means you probably don’t have an extended family to drive around, while says you are outgoing and social. Those who drive a let’s say “family car” have less of a “sensation-seeking personality” than those who drive sports cars.
Cars, for many, are things that fulfill some esteem needs. Many people drive fancy cars in the hope of making others think (sometimes strangers) that have a high social status, and that this is why they should be respected. At often times, these people feel self-respect and superiority, but it’s not true. We always say that the clothes you have and the things you own should speak about who you are and not be a crutch that you lean on.
So, to conclude, we can say that it’s great if your car is an extension of yourself and that liking classic cars is just as great as admiring vintage clothing and items, but it should not become a value in itself. There are cars and objects today that have a great potential to become classics, so just enjoy them while they’re new!

The pontiac bonneville is my favorite. Other than seeing photographs of them, I can´t say I have memories 😉 Other than thinking how elegant cars were back in the days.
The Pontiac is really a great car. It’s interesting though to analyze how we have memories of things we are somehow not related too.
I LOVE classic cars!
We’re happy to count you on the list of classic car lovers!:)
