On the look-out!
Today we continue the list of items we think men would enjoy to receive, regardless of the person they receive it from: a man or a woman, a coworker or a family member. If you read the first part of our guide, you could see that the potential gifts we like to feature are very flexible and can be given in a variety of relations.
If last time, we also discussed what types of things make great gifts, today we wish to focus a little on the etiquette of gift giving. We were wondering what the appropriate way is to give a gift, and more importantly, what the appropriate way to receive it is.
The etiquette of giving and receiving gifts
The rule of thumb when it comes to giving, respectively receiving gifts is context. The context you are in determines the way you should receive or give a gift.
First of all, we can discuss the place and the surroundings. If you are at a Christmas party at the office and everyone is giving gifts and opening them on the spot, while all the others clap and wonder, it would be a little disrespectful to your coworkers to give someone in public a gift and tell them to open it later. Doing so, you try to place yourself on a higher step of the ladder than the others, marking the fact that you have a more intimate relationship with the person. We’re not saying having an intimate relationship is wrong, but giving a personal, private gift, should be done in a private surrounding.
From the context flows the whole philosophy of gift giving, receiving, wrapping and unwrapping. There is no exact handbook of what is nice and what is rude, since the etiquette is changing according to the environment and relationshop with the person, but if you wish to have something to guide you, always ask yourself this question: am I making people uncomfortable? If the answer is ‘yes’, you should probably rethink your gifting strategy.
Also, if you are not sure of what you should do, as the situation seems to be a little vague, you can simply ask: “should I open this now?”.
Note that what is important as well, is the fact that each culture or group has its own rituals of exchanging gifts, so if you enter a new culture or travel, make sure you are not doing or making an inappropriate gift before you open your wallet.
As for re-gifting, we encourage it; just as long as it does not create an awkward situation where you someone receives something they gave you.
Gift suggestions
Here are the next suggestions of gifts you might find nice, or simply use as a source of inspiration! The focus today shifts on more creative, personal items that are perfect for men who want to be seen and want to express their creativity through their clothing as well.
The Christmas tie
Red ties go great in business, but they also go great in the holidays time! This tie by Rachel Park Designs would make a great gift! Rachel Park is a cutting-edge fashion accessories designer who was tired with the ties she could see on shelves, so she decided to make her own brand. Even though it was not easy, her exciting colors, striking textures, bold prints, and contrast linings with an old wardrobe staple became her trademark and the traits of an uprising brand.
The fun sunglasses
Now it’s getting really funky! The VuerichB. – Cruisin’ n°194 found on the Mahonki website is a really great, wooden, eco-friendly pair of sunglasses! They are very creative and fun and make a great gift for a creative guy who likes to spend time in the sun, regardless of the season. We are big fans of Mahonki and we think that they’re doing a very good job!
The flower tie
In case the previous items were not creative enough, the ‘Eve’ tie by Severed Ties is something that is definitely going to make a wonderful gift to receive for any guy who likes to stand out and be noticed. The world won’t miss you in this predominantly pink with a flower print tie!
The Toque
Just when you thought it couldn’t get more artsy, allow us to introduce the Osmium Toque. This cap by Osmium, made from 100% cotton velveteen is very soft and comfortable and we think it’s perfect for an artistic guy. If you are afraid it might fall off, worry not, as it has an elasitc adjustment that will make sure it fits any man. If t will be worn as it is, or it will be turned into the next big art project, this headpiece is one fancy item!
The print t-shirt
Sometimes a simple t-shirt can go a long way. These t-shirts from the AC t-shirt shop can be worn as such, as undershirts or with an or closed jacket. Having the design situated on the upper half, they create a visual interest even if your jacket is closed. The v-neck confers them a more sophisticated took and ads a fine touch to an item that would not be very special without a colorful picture.
Don’t forget, that it’s the spirit of the gift and of the holidays that matter, not the gift itself, so try not to bump your head against the wall if you don’t get the right gift! It’s just a gift, there are other occasions!
Fraquoh and Franchomme
P.S. What do you wish for Christmas? Also, we are curious: do you like to unpack gifts in front of the person from whom you receive it? Also, when you give a gift, do you expect the person who receives it to open it right then?
