The Balmain FW 2016-17 Menswear Collection in Review

The fall-winter 2016-17 Balmain collection, which was unveiled during this year’s first Paris Fashion Week channeled French aristocratic style and elegance.

The collection, signed by the French label’s creative director Olivier Rousteing, fused references and inspiration themes that resulted in an original take on the French aristocracy and its beautiful lifestyle. The regal wardrobe was mixed with elements that would define an explorer more than a king, a combination which took the spirit of the French court and brought it to the 21st century.

And, because for Balmain the presentation is just as important as the collection, the designs were presented by contemporary men’s fashion model royalty, such as Jon Kortajarena, Marlon Teixeira, Marlon Teixeira, Marlon Teixeira and Francisco Lachowski.

The looks presented by Balmain for the autumn 2016 season truly demand careful attention, as they are composed of many elements and details that make them noteworthy.

The embroidered jackets, military-style coats, draped tops, checkered sweaters and gold-adorned cummerbunds were all tailored to perfection with much care.

These pieces were accessorized with riding boots and leather gloves, which completed the looks.

In terms of fabrics, leather and velvet were the main materials that defined the collection, and offered a truly regal, yet democratic opulence. To complete this vibe, the label also made use of stripes, paisley prints, plaids and buffalo checks, which were added with care to the garments.

Olivier Rousteing is definitely a fantastic designer, who has a complex view and has the fine ability to translate motifs and inspiration into modern, dressy garments. He once called himself a “teenager of fashion” and this self-definition is definitely translated into his vision: his clothes make use of a collage of elements and motifs, but he is always all about making them his own, which is what style is all about.

What is truly remarkable about his aesthetic is that it is a very serious one, Olivier doesn’t play around and that, secondly, he managed to make a Rousteing Balmain – he kept the spirit of the brand, but put his fingerprint on it, which is really the mark of a great designer.
