UK luxury brand Pringle of Scotland has recently unveiled its spring-summer 2017 menswear collection. The collection, inspired by the ever-controversial aesthetic of the 1980s consists of creations that are definitely eye-catching and that provoke thought and challenge the viewer to aesthetic considerations.
The 1980s were a time when really good fashions coexisted with really bad fashions. This is why, when one is using that decade for reference and inspiration, things can get quite risky and tricky. However, Pringle of Scotland managed to take only the best from the 80s and to balance it out pretty well with the aesthetic of the 21st century’s teens.
The collection, consisting of well-structured separates featured everything from jackets and shirts to pants and accessories. The color palette is very bold, but balanced out by the small number of colors used. Striped polos, a burgundy, blue and white ribbed-collar trench coat and papery black trousers and jackets were all part of the label’s vision for the spring-summer 2017 season.
One of the main things we liked about this collection was that it challenged us to take a close look at it: At first sight, many of the pieces seem very basic and boyish, in a naïve kind of way – items such as embroidered jeans are not something you’d expect from a fashion house such as Pringle of Scotland. Therefore, the pieces require more attention and a closer look, upon which one can identify the structure of the items, the good play with proportions and way colors and textures are mixed. By implementing a great balance of elements, the label manages to create garments and looks that carry their own: cohesion is what makes this collection good and unique.
Head of Design at Pringle of Scotland Massimo Nicosia shold be given praise for offering a collection that is, besides very interesting and attractive and appealing from a visual point of view, also very practical. The garments, which are extremely wearable, also have a rather high degree of versatility: each piece can be worn with many items from the collection or from other collections.
We really enjoyed the fact that the designs were based on classic pieces and had a style of their own, showing that regular items can be high fashion and can be used to create a unique style, even if they are used for casual outfits.
Therefore, the collection can be also seen as a capsule collection. We would not be surprised if you would consider owning some of these items and making them part of your very own capsule wardrobe. Even though it’s a spring-summer collection, the clothes do work pretty much year-round and in almost any part of the world.
Pringle of Scotland is a label that has a history of over 200 years. In this time, it has managed to understand what it is customers want, how to achieve it and how to deliver an aesthetic that is truly theirs. There was a lot of thought that went into this collection: from the cuts and proportions (sometimes exaggerated for aesthetic impact) to the colors and the small details that defined it.
We invite you to take a look at the best looks from the collection and read our commentary:
