The direction in which designer Jeremy Scott has recently taken Moschino is a polarizing one. Season after season, Scott has played with eccentric and rather unexpected elements in a very over the top way. The line between tacky and eccentric is a very fine line, but the label has managed to always stay on the eccentric side, even though they’re always getting extremely close to the tacky side.
Jeremy Scott’s volcanic energy and irony is also visible in his staggering fall-winter 2016-17 menswear collection.
Challenging the concept of formal dress, Jeremy Scott drew his inspiration from cartoons and comic books, which he brought to the runway in a very sophisticated and remarkable way.
As usually, the American designer remained true to his own rules and offered a vision of a world of excess, where elements collide, but can coexist at the same time. Similar to his previous collections for Moschino, everything from the collection was exaggerated and over the top, but thought-through and created with the most care, making the collection coherent and valid.
The one word that can describe this collection best is entertaining. The sugary creations draw the eye of the beholder immediately and force you to analyze the designs, if not for their aesthetic qualities, at least for their technique. For the fall 2016 season, Moschino has truly brought our characters from comic books and cartoons to life, which is what many people from around the world have dreamt for a very long time. The great part is that the wearer can attribute any characterization to the characters.
The collection is a great play with colors and textures, as contrasting elements come together to create a new element: a vision that is both bidimensional and in 3D at the same time, in a way reflecting the state of the silver screen of today.
These color-rich outfits would be hard to wear as such on a day-to-day basis, but we can definitely see them work broken down into pieces and mixed up with simple essentials.
What is noteworthy about this collection is that despite its being eccentric, it is not outrageous – cartoons and comic books have been part of the global culture for so long that it’s great to see them on a runway in another manner than the classic print on a garment.
A very peacock-like collection, this presentation was one of the most captivating of the season, as it was at the same time conceptual, outlandish and, in a bizarre kind of way, wearable.
Who said suits cannot come in neon colors and that you can’t wear combat boots, jeans, parkas and cardigans that have been painted to the extreme?
Fashion and style were in this collection more than just a way to express ideas and concerns; they were also means of asking questions and pondering on essential themes regarding our personal image and the boundaries of the human appearance.
To conclude, it can be argued that fashion can truly be whatever we make it to be and this collection is a good support for this idea.
