The IVANMAN spring-summer 2017 menswear collection was presented during Mercedes Benz Berlin Fashion Fashion Week and was a great example of how sometimes, less is more.
Playing with oversized silhouettes and textures, the collection made the most of minimal elements, powering through simplicity and elegance.
Soft pinks and blues were balanced out with solid neutrals such as white or black, which definitely made for a formula for success.
To create a collection based on few elemens and to give a great outcome, the focus must definitely be on the details. And that is exactly what the label did for their pieces. The colors were just right: not to wishy-washy, not too bright, the proportions were carefully chosen and the cuts were impeccable. Not only were the garments great, but they also gave elegantologists a few lessons in style:
One, that you can mix boxy, oversized pieces with slim-fit ones. As long as they fit you and the sewing lines fall on your natural joint lines, there is no reason why you can’t mix big with skinny.
Two, that you can mix complementary colors such as pink and blue and that it certainly looks best if the two have the same saturation (the same brightness).
And three, that if you wear a good neutral (beige, black, white, brown, khaki, dark blue, gray, ivory, etc.), in a strong shade and shape, you can wear it with any colors, regardless of their cultural connotation. In other words, it’s rare to see baby pink look so great on adults.
Other than that, we really enjoyed the length of the pants: shorter trousers are definitely in style, but they haven’t broken into the mainstream yet, so it’s great when a designer is pushing on a note. Also, we thought it was interesting that some looks were work with dress shoes while others were worn with sneakers. The clothing from this collection (which covered everything from jackets and pants to shirts and tank tops) all had pretty much the same degree of formality/casualness – even though they were different, the label kept it quite cohesive in terms of vibe. Despite this, the clothes did work just as well with dress shoes as they did with sneakers, which is a clear indicator of their versatility.
It’s definitely impressive how IVANMAN designer Ivan Mandzukic managed to create a simple, yet very elegant collection using bright colors and few design elements. According to the designer, the inspiration for the collection was Bagdad Cafe (Out of Rosenheim), a 1987 film directed by Percy Adlon and starring Marianne Sägebrecht. One can definitely see the vibrant vibe of the movie in this collection. In fact, at one point in the film, there is even a picture of girl wearing a baby blue dress on a pink background. Just a detail, but, what a difference a detail can make.
Detail-oriented, vibrant and colorful, the IVANMAN spring-summer 2017 collection was definitely one of the highlights of the season. It shows that elegance can be expressed in many ways and that caring for details can’t take you anywhere but far. And that is what fashion is all about.

T-shirts rarely look good on the runway, but I guess this one works quite well…
