Paris Fashion Week wrapped up recently in the French capital. The autumn-winter 2019-20 collections which were showcased during the event were in many ways expected (often, we could see just variations of the things we’ve seen a lot of during the last seasons), but there were a few nice surprises. For example, we could see some clear trends we were not expecting such as creative takes on jackets and the heavy use of knits.

Take a look at some of our favorites look from this edition:

 

 

Givenchy

 

 

At Givenchy, it was a nod to the 70s. While this has been a common theme on the runways of the world recently, we enjoyed the fact that the Givenchy autumn 2019 collection featured many updated versions of classic 70s clothes. We especially loved this shiny trench coat (the color and texture are amazing) and the fact that the pants only give you a hint of the 70s, not a stack of calendars.

 

 

Louis Vuitton

 

 

The look was probably our favorite from the entire PFW AW19-20. The idea of having layered jackets is really cool, it simply wants us to see more such looks, with more variations: it’s a true stimulus. The color was also very well chosen and the details are stunning as well. Well done, Louis Vuitton!

 

 

Jil Sander

 

 

Also in the stunning layering category, Jil Sander showcased a fantastic trench coat look featuring layers. It is a simple look, but the concept is so strong that its impact is very big!

 

 

Dior Men

 

 

A third interesting jacket came from the Dior Men collection, which featured flaps placed diagonally. This type of outfit is very interesting because it is innovative, but still very wearable, practical and interesting. As a side note, the Dior Men collection was probably our favorite from the entire Fashion Week.

 

 

Berluti

 

 

Red and pink is a rather hard combination to pull off, but Berluti delivered a fantastic pink and red look. What we loved about it was not just the color combo (meaning that great shades of the two colors were used to an impactful look), but also the contrast between the softness of the colors and the boldness of the masculine cuts. Great, great, great!

 

 

Off-White

 

 

This Off-White look is uncommon and a bit odd, but it works in a rather strange way, which is why we like it. These days, there’s a lot of oversized, hyperbolic clothes on the runways of the world, which makes the concept rather boring, but we did like this look because it has an interesting play with proportions (the weight is naturally in the lower half, making it look like a structure) and because it is a high-and-low mix that actually works.

 

 

Valentino

 

 

When we think of Valentino, we don’t necessarily think of a jumpsuit, which is why this sporty look came as a cool addition to the brand’s autumn-winter collection. We love the broader upper part with the red script and the way in which it was matched to sneakers featuring small red details.

 

 

Ami

 

 

A rich and deep color mixed with a classic pattern usually results in a very upscale mix. This Ami look goes to show that and is a great lesson in style. We would have liked for the jacket to be a bit more fitted, but for a runway show, we can accept it, as it makes a good visual impact.

 

 

Sulvam

 

 

Some of the looks from the Sulvam collections went in a Regency direction, which is very cool. This could be a way opener to a comeback of couture, including in menswear. Surely, this look was very on-trend with its athletic appeal, but we did like the overall way in which the inspiration was processed.

 

 

White Mountaineering

 

 

Big knits may sound like a fashion cliché, but if you do it right it can work well. This White Mountaineering look featured many layers of knitted fabrics, but worked because of the attention to detail and refined play with proportions.

 

It seems that there is indeed a sight of a come-back of high elegance, as we wrote in our trend forecast, but we’re still far from it at this moment. However, trends usually work in a snowball manner: they start out small and then get bigger and bigger. The rise of new aesthetics definitely has us on our toes as we look forward to the next fashion shows of the year.
