The red carpet of the Oscars is for many people more exciting than the Academy Awards themselves. Many people tune in to the see the looks celebrities wear on Hollywood’s biggest night and to break down their sartorial choices and styling.
The Oscars have in the eyes of many become a caricature of themselves and the clothes worn by celebrities are considered by some exclusivist voices an automatic no-go.
Despite this, it can be said that it is fun to watch the red carpet and take a major lesson from it, and that is that if something looks one way on a runway model, it doesn’t mean that it will look the same on anybody. This is clearly visible in womenswear, as women wear nice gowns and amazing jewelry, but it can be also seen on men.
This year, the dress code at the Oscars was “black tie” and most men did wear black tie-ish outfits, which looked rather good and made great promo images for luxury brands.
Viggo Morensen looked amazing in Dior Men (we liked the fact that he took the vest route too, as, most people, when they wear black tie outfits go for cummerbunds) and Nicholas Hoult (who also wore Dior Men), and Joe Alwyn, stars of “The Favourite” also looked dressed to the nines. Henry Golding also looked impeccable in his evening suit. Brian Tyree Henry also looked great in an all-black ensemble.
While black was as usual, the most worn color, there were some more colorful options to see. For example, Richard E. Grant wore burgundy, David Oyelowo wore a subtle dark green velvet suit which as really beautiful and Paul Rudd wore blue.
Chadwick Boseman, a star of “Black Panther” even wore a beautiful tuxedo featuring a print.
Besides these good examples, there were some “misses” as well, the biggest being singer Pharrell Williams who wore a short-pant camouflage suit, which is not something that really works; and especially not with white socks. While we do understand the idea was that you can look “evening” even in something as unconventional as shorts and camouflage, wearing the opposite of eveningwear and calling it evening wear does not make it eveningwear.
The evening continued with the show, during which “Bohemian Rhapsody” won the Oscar for best picture – the most talked-about award.
The Oscars are still the biggest awards ceremony in Hollywood and people love to watch a big Hollywood pat on the back ceremony, filled with drama and glitz. At the same time, the 2019 edition was, as it has become in recent year, extremely political, which is a turn off for many possible viewers.
Thus, it remains to be seen how the Oscars will evolve in the future, but one thing is certain: they always go with the times…
