The pre-fall collections of today have become a bit of an odd mix. They come out at very different times and don’t really serve a very precise audience and purpose as they did in the past. However, their commercial success is very strong, as they are the collections that sit on the racks for the longest period.
Pre-fall collections are for many a great mix between the spring-summer proposal and the upcoming fall-winter season looks. In this sense, many people consider pre-fall collections to be capsule collections – timeless pieces you can wear anytime and which you can repurpose for many years.
Thereofre, while pre-fall collections are the bridge between the warm and the cold season, which is why they are just that right balance a capsule collection needs, their capsule status makes them be more watered down from trends. This, in many ways, is a good thing, as they make for amazing investment pieces, which can be worn both in cold and warm weather. Probably this is why people like them so much and why they are such a big commercial success.
These days, runway trends in menswear are a bit dated and gruesome. This is something most men would probably agree on. In this sense, the pre-fall 2019 collections are a great window into (potential) cool menswear. Moreover, the collections are usually a mix of menswear and womenswear, which forces the labels to match the general up-tone of women’s clothes with their men’s outings.
This season brought many noteworthy and remarkable things, with simplicity and the charm of impeccable tailoring being the main trend. Givenchy was amazing, but so was the Robert Cavalli collection, which was very colorful and came as a cool balance to Givenchy’s simple take on the season.
Dior Men was on fire with a beautiful collection featuring many sash-style scarves, which we’ve seen before, but which, for the moment don’t stop to amaze. Overall, it needs to be said that over the last seasons, Dior came out with some really impressive collections. Their spring-summer 2020 collection is as well one to be remembered.
The big surprise of the season was the Moschino collection, which played on the Roman Empire and a showman theme, on a royal aesthetic and processed these themes in the brand’s vibe and aesthetic. It was a really great collection which flew a bit under the radar and which deserves more praise. We could see a lot of draping and some really bold pieces that are true statement-garments. The collection also brought a lot of showpieces, but which did not take away from the wearable items.
All in all, the pre-fall 2019 men’s looks were quite charming.
But, what still needs to be pointed out is the really odd ratio of women’s items to men’s, where one must look really hard to find some men’s pieces in these collections. We certainly want to see more.
