Many people like to spend a part of their free time attending sporting events and matches. And, while many sports stadiums don’t have strict dress codes for fans to adhere to, there are some outfits that are a no-go when attending a big game.
It doesn’t matter if you are a soccer, basketball, football or tennis fan, here are some tips on what not to wear to a sports event.
A suit
Unless you want to feel hot and sticky throughout a game, you should leave your suit at home. If you are heading to the stadium straight from work, you may still find a place to change. The reason why a suit doesn’t really work on a stadium is because it is not occasion-appropriate. It will make you stand out, but not necessarily for the right reasons. Stadiums are not business offices or theaters and thus, casual outfits are best suited for them.

A large headpiece
While you might think your much-loved team is a favorite to win the NBA Championship or Super Bowl, you probably shouldn’t wear an obnoxious headpiece to express your passion. In the end, you are not the mascot.
Even if you are a diehard fan of the Milwaukee Bucks, who have enjoyed a spectacular season and are the odds-on favorite to lift the Larry O‘Brien trophy this year, you will appear the opposite of stylish. Plus, it is bound to annoy fellow fans who might be unable to watch the players in action, as a result.
Yes, it might boost your chances of appearing on TV, but you can guarantee you will become the most hated person in the stands.Â
A personalized jersey
While a personalized jersey might look cute on kids, you can rest assured adults will look more than a little odd wearing something like that. After all, the fans in the stand don’t need to know your name. While there is nothing wrong with wearing your team’s latest jersey, you should leave the customized name to the professionals on the pitch or court.Â
A half jersey
Unsure who to support at a big game? Whatever you do, don’t be tempted to wear a half jersey, which features half of one team’s jersey and one half of the opposition’s jersey. This is a rather interesting thing to wear outside the field, but while at a game it may prove to cause confusion.
If you are unsure on who to root for at the event, wear neutral clothing to avoid annoying other sports fans.Â
A jersey for a different sport
While you might be a passionate Boston Red Sox fan, you shouldn’t don your much-loved jersey to a New England Patriots game or you will look as if you got lost on the way to a baseball game. Show you are a passionate sports fan by either wearing either the right jersey, or neutral clothing. Â
A costume
While a costume will boost your chances of appearing on a Jumbotron at a big game, you can guarantee it will not be an original idea, as there will be many people just like you in the audience. Plus, once half-time arrives, you will likely be feeling hot, sticky and uncomfortable and you might even struggle to sit down in your oversized or inflatable outfit. Your buddies might feel more than a little embarrassed about the attention you bring too.Â
If your team does lose a big game, you will be forced to endure the walk of shame as you walk out of the stadium, as your outfit will then be the opposite of funny. So, while it might seem hysterical before a big game, it might feel like a big mistake once it has come to an end.Â
What you should wear to a game
So, if you want to watch a sports game in comfort and style, you can wear a cool t-shirt, a pair of jeans and a lightweight jacket. It will prevent you from appearing like an attention seeker, you will look effortlessly stylish and you can warm up or cool down when necessary.Â
The right clothes and accessories can have a strong positive impact on your participation at an event. In the end, watching a game should be all about fun and an upbeat experience and your clothes should be something that help you achieve that. And that’s what sporty style is all about.
