New Study Reveals the Cost of a Self-Care Day and It’s Shocking

We’re all stressed and in need of a self-care day, right? Well, before you start scheduling appointments and making plans, consider the price you might pay for all of your favorite activities.

A new report from Groupon has shed light on the surprising cost of a self-care day in the United States. The study, which analyzed prices of popular activities that make up the perfect self-care day across the country, found that a day of pampering can come with a hefty price tag.

Especially since after the COVID-19 pandemic, Americans are increasingly prioritizing self-care, with many turning to activities like skin care, meditation, exercise, massages, spa treatments, and fitness classes to unwind, recharge, and prioritize themselves. However, the cost of these indulgences can vary significantly depending on where you live in the country.

The study found that New York City, Seattle, and Boston are the most expensive cities for a self-care day, with average costs upwards of $430. On the other hand, Tampa, Tulsa, and Virginia Beach were identified as the least expensive cities, where a self-care day can cost less than $280. The self-care activities looked at were the cost of an iced latte, 50-60 minute massage, manicure, pedicure, facial, and brunch.

At no surprise to anyone familiar with the cost of New York City goods and services, the city was also the most expensive place for each of the self-care activities aside from facials where Seattle took the lead. To put in perspective just how expensive the city is, the report shows that the cost of a massage in New York City is 60% higher than the same massage in Tampa, Florida.

While the cost of some self-care activities can be a barrier for some, many people believe that it is a worthwhile investment in their overall well-being and happiness. Rest assured if price is an issue and you need a treat-yourself kind of day, there are still plenty of things you can do to practice self-care, including: going for a walk, listening to music, taking a nap, doing an at-home manicure, and many more.
