Make the Right Impression in Bed: A Guide to Bed Linens (B)

One thing that is often not looked at, but is part of your life and mood is the way you sleep and the way you wake up.

We recently wrote about the concept of “metafashion” which is what we mean by all the things that are not related to fashion directly but they give you a good spirit and an attitude. The bedding you use are a part of metafashion. They’re not clothes, but they’re essential to our looking well and feeling well.

According to studies, chronic lack of sleep, or poor-quality sleep, has a negative effect on the way we feel – and on the way we look. When we are asleep, our cells rebuild and repair themselves (the growth hormone functions only at night). If we don’t sleep, this function is impaired. If we sleep badly, we are likely to become stressed, and this can cause the capillaries to tighten up, affecting the flow of nutrients to the skin and scalp and causing our skin and hair to look dull.

Many men don’t actually look at their beds at something that needs to be considered, but the way you sleep is really important. Sleeping in a great environment, in a comfortable bed and bedding is important because it will improve the quality of your sleep and the morning will find you more relaxed and in a better mood. We associate “making our beds” with the time we were kids and someone used to care of it for us, so the lessons on what makes good beddings” never actually came across. Well, it’s time to find out more. There is no difference if you live alone, if you try to make an impression to someone you don’t know or if you live with someone: your bed must look and feel great, because that’s where it all starts.

Just like in the case of clothes, we recommend that you get high quality linens for several reasons. First of all, we know everyone looks at the price and thinks buying luxury linens is expensive. When we talk about clothes, we speak about the cost/wear ratio. Here, we have the same thing: it’s totally worth spending more money for a pack of quality linens that you sleep in every night than buying a cheap pack that will go bad fast and you won’t feel great in.

So, here’s what you need to look for when you buy bed linens:

  1. Bed linens come in a variety of fabrics such as silk, satin, linen, cotton/poly and more. The most popular is cotton. Cotton is a natural fiber, it will keep you cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.  There are many different species of cotton bedding – Pima, Supima, Egyptian etc. Overall Egyptian is considered the best. It does cost more than the others, but it is extremely soft and gets better after each wash.
  2. Luxury linens are frequently sold as pieces. Consider purchasing a complete set of linens (flat, fitted, pillowcases) at the same time. This will eliminate mis-matched items. Consider 2 sets -one on the bed, one in the linen closet. Some opt for 3 sets so they can have a set at the laundry. Accidents do happen, it is always a good idea to have a clean set you can put on the bed if needed.
  3. Know what size of bed you have – full, queen, king, or California king. If you are not sure what size your mattress is, then go to links like Best Mattress Reviews & Guides | Try Mattress and you find the most updated information there. Check the thickness of your mattress before you purchase.  Newer mattresses are thicker today; so, if you have a thick one, you want to look for deep-pocket sheets.
  4. Bed sheets should be washed – not dry-cleaned.  Use a mild detergent and medium heat and your bedding will look beautiful for years.
  5. Keep your bedroom décor in mind. The most popular colors in luxury linens are neutrals (white, ivory, taupe) as they always match everything else in the room and never go out of style
  6. Thread count does not equal quality.  For years people have thought that the higher the thread count, the better the sheet. Not true – it is the grade of cotton that determines how soft and how well the sheeting will perform

High-quality sheets have a softness that is unmatched, not only do they look great, they feel great next to the skin and they get softer and softer with each washing.

Just as your clothes speak volumes about you, so does your bedroom. But you might ask yourself where and how to find higher quality bed sheets? Vero linens, for example, is a brand that creates luxury bed linens. Their goods are being produced in Italy, by a family that has been doing this for over 150 years. Tradition plays an important part, as Northern Italy is known to make great fabrics since the Middle Ages. Even designer houses create their clothes in Northern Italy and take great pride in the region’s reputation.  So, finding out this sort of things about a brand makes your shopping experience better. It’s great that today you can buy fine goods online, so the costs are lower and they are being shipped to your door!

We’re sure that knowing all of this, you will have a great night, but we still want to wish you “good night!”

Great post! I’m not a man and I learnt something 🙂
I agree though Hugh quality linen and a beautifully made bed make all the difference and we spend so much time there! We will spend $200 on a pair of jeans that we wear once in a while but would shirk at the idea of spending half that on bed linen. Crazy!
