Why We Love The Nautical Look

The nautical look done right.
The nautical look done right.

Summer is not only in the weather, the sun and the holidays. Summer is in the mind as well. And there’s no better way to say “relaxation and charm” than with a nautical look. The nautical look is one of our favorite looks, and for so many reasons. First of all, it seems to come back every year, which doesn’t make it a trend anymore, but a timeless style in its own rights. The nautical look is the expression of European casual elegance. The nautical look first became a “look” in the 1920s and has been around ever since.

Wearing the nautical look can be tricky, as some people might tend to transform their outfits into costumes. This is why the rule we like to follow when it comes to nautical looks is to keep it really, really simple. Simplicity is, in the end, the ultimate sophistication and this credo does not make an exception in the case of the nautical look. The nautical look is all about stripes, navy blue, white, denim, everything kept within these lines and following just the rule of simplicity and cleanness. Here’s a tip about wearing stripes: if you feel that the horizontal stripes of a nautical shirt might make you look a little bigger than you’d wish, go for diagonal stripes and make sure that you have figure-flattering clothes. And if you don’t like stripes in any way, you can always go for the polka dots.

One of the reasons we like the nautical look is because it can be expressed without having to have the whole package. For example, certain accessories will say “sailor” more than a sailor outfit itself. A nice watch can give you that summer resort look in just minute. Another element you can add are bags. Antonio Marras, one of the most capricious and creative Italian designers, collaborated with Piquadro, an Italian brand that offers business travel accessories to create some amazing retro-marine pieces for their latest collection, which launched last month. The Spring Summer 2014 collection is really amazing as all the bags come in two different versions: one with black and white stripes and another one checkered with an overprint in different shades of gray, beige and brown.

We liked it because they suggest a way to bring the nautical look into your daily life, as the pieces are really versatile.

This type of pieces are a great investment, as they are timeless as we said before.

To conclude, we can say that the nautical style is not going anywhere, at least not soon. It’s elegance, simplicity and versatility make it a look you can wear anytime, anywhere, at any age and by anyone.
