From Rembrandt to Suitsupply: Timeless Values And Beauty

On Attire Club, one of our core concepts is that fashion is not a thing that exists itself, that clothes are connected to people, to their stories and to the way these stories are told, whether it’s through music, painting or film. Our belief is that everything useful and beautiful in the world is connected.

Suitsupply is a brand that created a lookbook for their fall/winter 2013 collection that is really a great source of inspiration and information. They matched the clothes to people who might have or have not existed and to real and imaginary stories from old ages.

The lookbook is however no random choice. The brand has partnered with the Rijkmuseum in the Netherlands to celebrate the reopening of the Dutch National Gallery. The clothes of the Dutch brand have been photographed in front of paintings by Rembrandt and Vermeer in order to demonstrate that the old can coexist with the new.

The Suitsupply look book is a great demonstration that the present is strongly connected to the past, that the modern world is different and yet not so different from the world of the past centuries and that some things are timeless.

The clothes are definitely inspired from the past and applied to timeless classics. The colors, the fabrics, the patterns and the textures all create a unity of beauty and refined, elegant masculinity. These men are dreamers with a vision, connecting the past to their own moments, expressing themselves through style and beauty.

This collection of photos is crafted in an extremely attentive way too. The colors are well matched, the lighting is amazing (we can tell you that to match the lights in the paintings with the lights in the studio it’s a really demanding work), the concept is well thought-through. All these things result in this amazing look book, which is really more than just a way of showing clothes off. It’s a deep connection to the past, to the sources of inspiration: painting, music, a world vision and more.

It’s great that others see the harmony between colors, the past, the present and why not… the future?

I am not sure they did much service to the artist by inserting their designs in the paintings, even though it’s not the worst.

We get your point, and, as usually, it’s each to his own, but we feel that one can definitely build on a previous work of art, regardless of whether it’s for a commercial purpose or just and “art for art’s sake” purpose.
