The 2015 MTV Video Music Awards took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. The 32nd edition of the awards show was hosted by Miley Cyrus and featured many musical moments and groovy appearances.
And, as with any awards show, there was of course a red carpet. The red carpet at the 2015 VMAs was in a way an eclectic place, but not as eclectic as we would have liked. The awards, which are at a deep level a simulation of the All-American high school life (in a way it’s interesting that they were held not long before school starts again), were, from a sartorial point of view a little overdone.
Many stars who attended the event want to appeal to a very young audience, and they tend to exaggerate and kitch their looks up. However, some people who attended the show did it right. So we have mixed feelings about the fashions from the show.
Let’s take a look at some menswear outfits we saw on the red carpet last night and see what they’ve done right in our book and what they’ve done wrong.
But, before we do that, we want to give a special shout out to Miley Cyrus, whose style, even though it’s not always our thing, has a voice of its own, which is what real style is all about!
Nick Jonas
Nick Jonas has been on our favorites lists before and here he is again. Wearing a leather jacket that matched his leather pants, with a neutral t-shirt and a pair of statement pants, Nick Jonas (or his stylist) created an outfit that everything-appropriate. The reason: Nick understood that the VMAs are a casual event, but that does not mean that they are not an event. And this is what you can wear at a casual, yet eventful outing: leather – which is a powerful and very versatile material, mixed with a simple, neutral t-shirt. Remember, in fashion, neutrals are a series of colors that go with anything and with each other. These colors are: gray, beige, black, white, tan, ivory, khaki, dark blue, etc.
We loved Nick’s outfit and recommend it as inspiration for your outfits as well. His outfit was young, dressy, but not too dressy and fun, which is what the Video Music Awards are all about! Good job, Nick!
Miguel
While we were not thrilled about the pants and were absolutely not thrilled about the neckline of his shirt (which should get another name, as his neck was very far), we did love Miguel’s jacket. The reason: we believe that a strong jacket can balance out an outfit that is very ordinary, or, in this case, an outfit that is a little overdone. Even though the jacket looked OK and kind of saved the outfit, there is a lot we would change about this look – basically everything besides the jacket and maybe some of the jewelry.
Patrick Stump
Patrick Stump (right), who arrived with Pete Wentz, was a pleasant surprise. Wearing a leather jacket and a pair of neutral pants, Patrick styled up his outfit with a well-fitting shirt that featured a great accent collar and a nice, simple leather belt that polished and completed the outfit.
Simplicity is always the best way to go, but managing to achieve simplicity and still be remarkable is hard, so we congratulate Patrick for his achievement.
Prince Royce
The singer – songwriter was an interesting presence on the red carpet at the Video Music Awards. The reason why he pulled off a full-white outfit is because the pieces were all in the same aesthetic, which was an aesthetic that mixed casual elements with very formal ones. White is a rather formal color, and if you wear very well-fitted white pieces, you better look formal. But, if you add a lot of casual elements (zippers, a t-shirt aesthetic, cuts on the pants), you might be able to pull off an outfit that is anyhing but boring. And Prince Royce did it.
Jeremy Scott
Designer Jeremy Scott’s red carpet look was… bright. While we do generally love Jeremy’s eclectic style and feel that he is a man who can pull off the craziest (in a good way) things, for us, the TV-inspired outfit did not cut it. While we generally love a good re-interpretation of very classic attire, and we encourage men to show more skin and be bold, this color test pattern outfit was a little too colorful for us. Maybe if the design would have been taken one step further and it would have been even more exaggerated, it would have been better. But again, Jeremy, we love you, so this time we’ll have to agree to disagree on this outfit.
So, as you can see, the red carpet was quite complex this year.
It has been said that this is going to be the last edition of the VMAs, but according to Mike Jafar, Viacom’s vice president, there is going to be a 2016 edition of the awards as well. In the meantime, we will definitely look out to see what our favorite (and less favorite) stars will put on and search for inspiration wherever it may come.

I agree, Miguels jacket was great.
It was a nice jacket, wasn’t it?
I have to be honest, both the womens and mens style at VMAs was wholly uninspiring for me. I mean when you compare it to what the stars would have worn in the late 80s: Prince, Boy George, MJ, Paul Weller…it makes me a lil’ sad. Now we have Prince Royce who yes does look good in white, but its the MAs coooome on, push the envelope! And then there’s J. Scott who tried so hard to push it, he fell of the cliff…oh dear…
He “tried so hard to push it, he fell of the cliff” – great!
And yes, when comparing red carpet events these days with those from the past, today’s looks are generally quite low!
