The menswear collections by Italian label Etro are known for their conceptual feel, inspired often by travels and antiques. Creative director Kean Etro, who is in charge of the menswear collections, worked on an intriguing and colorful collection for the spring-summer 2016 season, inspired by multiculturalism and primordial life. Featuring a strong lineup of colors and references, the collection impressed with luxurious materials, intricate prints and decadent colors.
Reducing the opulent by concentrating it, the collection was at the same time extravagant and minimal, as suit jackets and dusters in strong prints and colors came out featuring small or no lapels or fastenings (sometimes they were hidden). These were accompanied by minimally shaped pullover shirts, baggy shorts and cool leather jackets.
The sartorial impact of the collection was very big and was achieved by reducing many elements such as collars and linings to a minimum.
The collection, unveiled during Milan Fashion Week was inspired by “the cyclical symbol of life – a paisley”, which stands for ‘the Tree of Life’, according to a Persian legend. Therefore, it made a lot of sense why the label used so many colors and worked on achieving a fresh, stylish and bold aesthetic.
The intricate prints bring a sense of dreams, mysticism and original culture. The collection is all about origins, purity and the sources of life. ‘You see no lapels, no buttons, no nothing, everything is super clean even the prints, only egg shapes’, said the designer, motivating his collection, where the egg is “a symbol of primordial life.”
To achieve this philosophical feel, the designer relied not only on cuts and prints, but also on sophisticated, young and soft colors such as dusty and midnight blue, blushing pinks, taupe, fire red, saffron, green, black and more.
The relaxing tone-on-tone palette and the way in which the fabrics were used gave a sense of infinity and continuous reinvention of the world, as some designs also featured convergent prints that directed the eye towards the center of the look.
Once again, Etro used their ancestry in the craft of textiles to offer a fairytale collection designed for a man who is romantic and deep.
