The 2016 edition of the BET Hip Hop Awards were held on September 17, 2016. They aired on October 4, 2016. The awards show, which was held at Atlants’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, brought together a plethora of industry heavies, all of whom brought their best in the style department. It definitely was a star-studded event and we selected four looks to exemplify the take on menswear from the BET Hip Hop awards.
Take a look at our fashion edit:
Busta Rhymes
All-around hip hop star Busta Rhymes wore a great red, gold and silver jacket that was definitely a stand-out piece. What we enjoyed about his overall look was that he wore it with a red shirt underneath, which enhanced that power of the jacket and did not diminish it, as you would expect. It’s really great that the hip hop style, if we may, does not shy away from being bold, colorful and strong and that people from the hip hop community often wear clothes that are very poignant.
Fabolous
Fabolos wore what can be described as a very interesting take of the classic denim jacket. We really enjoyed the proportion of the flowers, their placement and the color mix: pink and light blue (two complementary colors), which were supported by beige (a neutral color) add-ons. Moreover, while we would have ditched the watch, we thought his other accessories, especially the bracelet were right on point. Great job!
Gucci Mane
Rapper Gucci Mane wore a cool black and white shirt. We have not seen this type of shirt on the red (or green) carpet much, so it was definitely a wise choice. Newness is always in style! We thought the outfit could be an interpretation of a classic black and white look, so we definitely consider it a fun choice. It’s always great to see something that makes you want to look at it a second time and consider how you might wear that.
Kent Jones
Singer Kent Jones relied very much on accessories and on a color scheme for his 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards outfit. Wearing street attire based on a red-black combination with, the singer definitely expressed his personality through his style. We really liked the way Kent made a utilitarian plaid shirt look on the dressy side. His accessories were also on point, with a nice hat and a medium chain around the neck that completed the look.
From bling to plaid, there was something for every taste in hip hop at the 2015 BET Hip Hop Awards. It’s hard to decide who did it best, as hip hop fashion can be very debatable, but in the end, that’s not the point. The point is to see how members of a community can express themselves and at the same time their belonging to a community through style.
