To celebrate the third issue of the InCompany by Attire Club magazine, we are taking a look at a list of fascinating facts about magazines.
Magazines have represented a strong part of the fabric of society for a very long time. While their history is not an extended one timewise, their impact and influence on society cannot be denied.
Here are some facts your probably did not know…
History
The first magazine we have on record is the Erbauliche Monaths Unterredungen, a German literary and philosophy magazine published in 1663.
The first general-interest magazine was The Gentleman’s Magazine, which was first published in 1731 in London.
The editor of The Gentleman’s Magazine, Edward Cave, also known by his pseudonym Sylvanus Urban, was the first to use the term “magazine”, which was intended as an analogy of a military storehouse.
Founded in 1842, The Illustrated London News, founded by Herbert Ingram was the first illustrated magazine.
Crunching the numbers
Around 50% of all magazines published are sold on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. The lowest selling day is Wednesday, with only around 11% of the total sold on an average week.
Saturday is usually the best magazine sales day of the week. Sunday becomes the best day only during the month of July, when sales outpace Saturdays by 8%.

In the United States of America, more people read magazines than use the internet. A recent poll showed that 91% of American adults have read a magazine in the last six months, while only 85% declared that they have surfed online.
People who read magazines are more likely to engage in activities such cooking for fun, aerobics, Pilates, walking for fitness or going at the gym. This makes them perfect for healthcare content and advertising.
The average magazine reader spends more than 53 minutes on each issue. If you multiply that by 9.3 issues, which is the average number of magazines a readers checks out a month, it totals an 8 hours each month spent on magazine reading. This is the equivalent of an entire workday.
While the trend is to move print publications online, the opposite happens with big brands and influent business, which launch print publications, as magazines strengthen a label’s image.
Magazines rank in the first position at influencing consumers to start a search for something online – higher than newer media options.
