Chinese New Year: Rooster Inspiration

The Chinese year of the Rooster will begin shortly, as the month of January approaches its 27th day. In the 12-year Chinese zodiac cycle, the rooster ranks tenth out of the 12 animals. 2017 is going to be a year of the rooster.

What is the year of the Rooster?

The year of the Rooster comes along every 12 years, after a year of the Monkey and right before a year of the Dog. Hence, years of the Rooster include 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017, and 2029.

The “Fire Rooster”

In Chinese astrology, every zodiac year is associated with an animal, but also with one of the five elements, as Chinese culture sees them: Gold (Metal), Wood, Water, Fire, or Earth. The astrology of the year is shaped by both the zodiac sign and the element that defines it. 2017 is a Fire Rooster year. Sign-element combinations recur every 60 years.

Famous Fire Roosters are, among others, Stephen Fry, Dawn French, Martin Luther King III, Hans Zimmer, Dolph Lundgren and Donny Osmond.

Traits of the Rooster

Roosters in general are associated with hard work, being engaging and active and talkative. Because of these traits, Roosters often engage in sports and are therefore quite healthy. It is said that Roosters are happiest when they are in the company of others, and therefore they enjoy parties and gatherings.

When it comes to negative traits, Roosters are said to be a bit vain – they want to be in the spotlight and tend to be unhappy when they’re not. They often seek attention which can sometimes lead to things such as bragging about their accomplishments.

Fire Roosters in particular are said in Chinese culture to be trustworthy. They are also described as having a strong sense of timekeeping and are very responsible when it comes to work.

Roosters and careers

Because Roosters take so much interest in their work, it is said that Roosters are appropriate to do jobs where they can achieve a lot. This is why they are said to make good sales people, athletes, journalists, firefighters, dentist and surgeons, police officers and restaurant owners, but also news people and stylists.

A Rooster and you

The Chinese see Roosters as devoted and loyal friends. They are said to be true to their word and bold. However, many people, especially sensitive people can find it hard to make friends with Roosters, as they need lots of attention on them, which can make wallflowers feel bad.

Roosters are said to get along well with Oxen and Snakes and not so well with Rats, Rabbits, Horses, Roosters and Dogs.
