Color Report: Burgundy

From the Prada autumn-winter 2017 collection

Burgundy became fashionable around 2015, when many designers introduced the oxblood shade in their collections. Burgundy was considered to be what navy was until 2015: a great alternative to the classic neutrals: brown, khaki, beige, gray, black, white, etc. Burgundy is not a neutral, but it is a color that is extremely versatile and easy to wear.

Since burgundy stepped into the spotlight, it became a big thing in fashion. Even today, many brands have burgundy clothes in their collections: it has become a chromatic classic in fashion.

Versatility

From the Etro autumn-winter 2017 collection

Burgundy is an extremely versatile color. It goes well with most skin tones – it flatters almost everyone, from people who have very fair skin to people who have dark skin tones. For a safe bet, go for a matte burgundy, this way, the shine won’t conflict with your skin’s undertone and you will be sure that it looks good on you.

Moreover, burgundy goes well with most colors. You can obviously wear it with neutrals such as beige, khaki and brown (the best neutral to mix with burgundy is a deep gray), but you can also wear it with more powerful colors.

For example, if you are putting together a casual outfit, you can wear burgundy with bright green (even neon green, although we wouldn’t go that high), orange and even light blue.

For dressier outfits, you can pair a deep burgundy with a dark, deep blue or even with purple. Once again, we recommend going for matte fabrics, not for shiny ones, as they look more serious, elegant and sophisticated.

Visual interest

Burgundy is a very attractive color, so you must always consider that it will draw the eye to it. When you are choosing a burgundy piece, you can almost be sure that it will be your center piece, so you must choose it wisely.

Because burgundy is so visually appealing, you can incorporate it into a pattern or you can only add burgundy accessories to accent certain parts of your look, such as a burgundy bow tie to draw attention to your neck or a bracelet to draw attention to your arm.

Size

From the David Hart autumn-winter 2017 collection

Because burgundy is such a powerful color that commands attention, you should always consider the amount of burgundy you want to wear and the placement of the burgundy on the outfit. For example, if you want to emphasize your chest, you can wear a burgundy shirt and add a neutral jacket on top. If you want to accent your legs, you can wear burgundy pants. If you want to draw attention to your shoulder and stomach, you can wear a burgundy jacket.

Burgundy is an amazing color that you can sport in every type of outfit. It has depth and is extremely elegant, which is why it can style up any outfit.

It is a fashion classic here to stay and we’re sure you will find great ways to incorporate it into your outfits, both dressy and casual.
