Moschino has gotten us used to quirky aesthetics over the last few seasons. From comic books to retrofuturistic prints, we’ve seen a lot of great color and style come from Jeremy Scott’s designs for the Italian brand.
In fact, Moschino is one of the few labels that continues to really go against the grain and put out colorful, fun and weird pieces. Their fashion shows are true shows and that’s why they deserve praise.
For their spring-summer 2019 collection, which was unveiled in Los Angeles, California, the brand worked with a circus-theme. We could see all the clichés of vintage circus walking the runway: the overdone clowns, the strongman, the animal tamers and so on. These were processed in a very contemporary and cool style and looked runway-ready. This was a big risk, as working with such clichés can take you very easily in a world of Halloween costume and overall cheap design. Of course, the colors, the glitz, the glam and the patterns were what you would expect: highly saturated colors in surprising combinations that worked really well together. The big surprise of the collection, however, was that some of the items were actually wearable. Not many, and definitely not in the ways they were styled for the runway, but some items, such as the sparkly tank top could be work in different everyday contexts. The shiny blazer for example could definitely work with a simple shirt and a neutral pair of pants. Or, why not – go crazy and wear them with other colorful things!
“I see my role in fashion as bringing the fun” said Creative Director Jeremy Scott about his collection and we would love to see more men bring the fun into their wardrobes as well.
The clothes from this summer collections are unfortunately not extremely wearable on a day to day basis, but we are really excited to seeing how the brand can transform them into pieces that one can wear outside of a costume party.
It is going to be interesting to see how Moschino will continue to develop its aesthetic and whether their style will catch more with the mainstream in the seasons to come.
