For the autumn-winter 2019 menswear season, Dior Men Creative Director Kim Jones proposed a great collection based on a collaboration with American artist Raymond Pettibon, a cult figure of the Southern Californian punk rock scene in the late 1970s and early 80s. Some of the artist’s motifs were featured on tees, knits, jackets, sweaters and other pieces, which brought an open vibe to the collection. As for the overall collection, this was a bit atypical for Jones, as the clothes featured mostly muted, sometimes dark and murky tones, which were balanced out by pops of colors, occasional patterns and shiny fabrics. It can be said that a lot of the value of the collection lies in this contrasting joining, which allowed the viewers to soak up every detail of the collection, as elements were clearly defined. Footnotes such as zebra and panther prints were also present, and completed the collecti
on.
In terms of proportions, we could see both fitted clothes and the inevitable oversized outerwear.
As for pieces, there was a bit of everything present: from jackets and pants to accessories. The highlight of the entire collection, however, were the big shiny shawl-cummerbunds styled as sashes, which gave an important and rather royal feel to the collection. These had a very special presence and it would be great to see men wear them, but, given the way things are going, this is little likely to take on as a trend.
When the collection was presented earlier this year, it also had a meta-aspect to it that many people commented on, as the models did not walk the runway, but stood still on a conveyor belt which carried them. In this regard, Jones commented: “The idea was they became like statues, standing there as they do in the couture salon.” This, alongside with the royal aesthetic of the collection are important, as, as we have mentioned in our trend forecast from a while back, we are seeing the first steps of a come-back of couture, even in terms of menswear.
