The Moschino Pre-fall 2019 Collection in Review

The newest pre-fall collection by Moschino was one of the true stand-outs of the season and, even more so, of the year. For this collection, Jeremy Scott took his inspiration from Federico Fellini’s movies. The collection was presented in Rome, at the Cinecittà studios, where Jeremy explained his collection by saying “It’s Fellini, it’s all the things I love about him, come to light . . . There are exaggerations, off-duty showgirls, Casanovas. It’s surreal, it’s otherworldly.”

And otherworldly it really was. The collection, which consisted of both men’s and women’s clothes, featured a very impressive array of highly creative looks. Many showpieces were mixed in with wearable items, the result being a fun and upbeat collection. What was most impressive about it was the fact that Scott managed to mix in references from very different areas, even though the main source of inspiration was Ancient Rome, to which he added his own and the brand’s aesthetic and make it all cohesive and coherent.

It’s a rarity in fashion to see a collection that combines so many aesthetics and references and puts them together in a single vision. That is a real artistic achievement, as managing to do such a thing is extremely difficult.

In many ways, it can be said that what Jeremy Scott managed with this collection was the encapsulate Fellini’s world in a collection: he combines registers and offered the audience a world of his own.

The visual elements to express this idea were there: powerful colors shine, interesting pieces (we loved the red sashes, similar to Dior’s) and odd mixes of colors.

The fact that this was a pre-fall collection made it more accessible, as trends these days are quite forced and brands can unleash their creativity in mostly in pre-fall and resort collections.

Overall, while we did have our ups and downs with Jeremy Scott’s Moschino collections, this collection was truly great, a veritable capsule collection, which deserves at the same time to be safeguarded and worn.
