How to Learn about Fashion

If you are a newbie and want to learn about fashion, you will be surprised to find out that the fashion world is these days present everywhere and that you can learn about it in very many ways. If you want to learn about a particular subject and really are clueless about where to go, you can go to a paper writing service providers and place an order on your subject of interest or you can simply go to other resources (some free, some paid), to learn about fashion and style.

Magazines

It goes without say that fashion magazines are the go-to number one place to learn about fashion. Most magazines like Vogue for example, are not particularly great if you want to learn about the history of clothes, but they are great if you want to be kept up-to-date with the latest trends and the who’s who of the fashion world. Fashion magazines are often not found in certain parts of the world, but you have a fair shot at finding them in your local library, especially if they have a periodicals section or a “foreign periodicals” section.

Often, magazines target a niche audience who has a certain aesthetic and a certain budget, so it’s worth going through many magazines before subscribing to one.

Books

A few decades ago, fashion was not really a big topic for books, especially for accessible books, but today, there are thousands of titles available to anyone. Sometimes, you can’t find what you are looking for in the local bookstore, as many places still don’t have lots of fashion books. However, there are many libraries that stack up on books that are not available on the market, so you can definitely try there or you can simply buy the books online. If you don’t know where to start, we recommend Racinet’s Costume History.

Documentary movies

If you want to have an in-depth grasp of the history of fashion, documentaries are great resources, as they cover essential information in an easy-to-understand, compact and entertaining way. Moreover, documentaries range from being extremely topical to very particular. Fashion documentaries are also great for those who want to learn about a certain topic, but who don’t have much time.

Films

Fiction movies are also great resources, but they always need to be taken with a grain of salt. You can’t say you learned something and quote a movie, as anything in fiction can be object of imagination. However, this being said, films like Who Are You Polly Magoo and others really paint a great picture of the fashion world.

YouTube

These days, every fashion brand has a YouTube channel. While many post just advertisements on their channel, it is definitely worth following the channel of your favorite brands, as, this way, you will be able to stay updated with what they do. There are also many great fashion commentators on YouTube or people like Loïc Prigent who offer really entertaining and informative videos.

Talks

Many fashion studies centers, universities or online platforms of different types make insightful talks available. These are sometimes harder to find and usually come in a long format, but they are great ways to obtain insightful information about the world of fashion.

Overall, one can’t help but notice that fashion is everywhere these days. Films, books and magazines are great resources to learn about your favorite designers, trends and history; but, if you want to really “get” clothes, you should go to stores and look at things, try them on and wear them. And that’s how you’ll get a complete picture!
