The name ‘flip flops’ is instantly recognizable to the majority of American and British people, although they are known differently around the world. For example, in New Zealand, they are called jandals, in Hawaii they are slippers, and in Australia, they are called thongs.
Flip flops have been around for decades now and are a perennial footwear choice for many people going on holiday to the beach or living in a warm or hot climate. The available colors and styles of flip flops have developed rapidly since the original design with a rubber sole and strap in black or brown shades.
Due to the sheer choice of flip flops out there, it can be quite a challenge to find the ones that suit your style and preferences. To help you out, here are five fashion tips to help you look trendy when wearing flip flops.
1. Get flip flops to suit your style
There are thousands of flip flop designs out there, and whilst some may be cheap and flimsy versions, others are higher-quality. Most flip flops feature a Y-shaped strap and come in a range of colors and patterns. The most famous kind of flip flops is probably havaianas thongs that first became popular in Brazil in the 1960s. Their rubber soles feature a texture like rice grain to provide extra grip and they are well-known for their creativity when making new models.
If you are looking for fancier flip flops, then it is possible to get leather straps to make the flips flop look and feel more formal as well as adding extra durability. However, they are less affordable and require some maintenance to prevent the leather from cracking or becoming moldy.
2. Go for a casual look
Flip flops are comfortable and convenient footwear if you are going for a casual style. Flip flops go well with most regular to slim fit jeans and tank top, t-shirt, or short-sleeved shirt. Accessories that add to a casual look are aviator sunglasses, a fabric shoulder bag, and a wristwatch. Flip flops are often worn as a part of a casual outfit as they are durable and generally comfortable for most daily activities.
3. Don’t wear socks
Many people probably already know this, but a massive fashion faux pas is wearing socks with flip flops or sandals. There are a few good reasons to avoid wearing socks with flip flops beyond the fact that it looks silly.
Firstly, when wearing socks and flip-flops it is more challenging to maintain enough grip between the sole and the material of the socks. Furthermore, socks will prevent the whole of your foot from fitting onto the sole as they block the Y-shaped strap from slipping between your toes. For these reasons, a sock-flip flop combination can even be dangerous to walk around in.
Secondly, socks worn with flip flops are likely to be unhygienic, especially if walking around in them all day. Not only will your feet sweat more, but your socks will pick up dirt and dust from the ground, leaving socks looking filthy especially white ones.
4. Balance out colors
The color of flip flops you choose depends on the colors you usually wear and if you want to make a statement. If you usually prefer to wear colors like black, gray, and white then you can choose to match them with beige flip flops or use colorful flip flops to give some contrast.
5. Pedicures
If you are going to wear flip-flops you may as well show off your feet, but first, you will need a pedicure treatment that will leave your feet feeling and looking fresh. This is, of course, something more popular among women, but even guys need to have good feet!
Finding the right flip flops that suit your personal preferences and style can be difficult; however, the five tips in this article about how to wear flip flops fashionably should have helped you.
