Make It Irish this Father’s Day

Father’s Day 2021 falls on Sunday, June 20th, and is celebrated on the same day in America, Canada, Ireland, and the UK. Though most countries celebrate on the same day, there are some exceptions, like Australia, where dads are celebrated in September instead.

Everyone and every country celebrate Father’s Day in their own way. Some people celebrate with a family feast, and some with a day out with Dad. The one tradition followed everywhere is giving a Father’s Day gift.  Below, we take a look at some great gift options for you this Father’s Day.

The Origins of Father’s Day

Did you know that Father’s day originates in America? In 1910, Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired to create a day when fathers were celebrated. Her inspiration was her own father, William Jackson Smart, who raised Sonora and her five siblings as a single parent. There was already a Mother’s Day, so Sonara lobbied her Pastor to celebrate fathers too. He relented, and the first Father’s day took place in Spokane, Washington.

In 1972, Father’s Day became an official celebration after being written into law by President Nixon. Countries around the world then adopted the festival, and now Father’s day is an annual tradition the world over, including Ireland.
