The Modern Gentleman’s Guide to Planning the Perfect Proposal

If there’s a special person in your life, and you’d like to make them a proposal of marriage, then you might understandably worry about exactly how you’re going to do it. After all, proposals aren’t something that we issue every day. Ideally, you’ll just make one of them in your entire life. As such, it’s worth putting a little bit of thought and planning into the moment. This needn’t mean resorting to cheap gimmicks. But it should mean making everything seem considered, and avoiding mistakes.

Choosing the Right Setting and Moment

When and where you propose matter just as much as how you do it. The place should inspire a sense of awe, ideally, and it should feel meaningful to both of you. That might mean travelling to somewhere familiar (and fondly remembered), or it might mean heading to somewhere interesting and new. If there’s a place you and your would-be spouse have already expressed an interest in visiting, then now might be the time to make it happen.

At the same time, you might want to consider the time of day. If you’re outdoors, that tends to mean picking the ‘golden hour’, beloved by so many photographers.

Finding the Right Ring

At the centre of just about every modern proposal is an engagement ring. Like it or not, this object will be what your partner’s attention will focus on. If you’ve chosen poorly, without accounting for personal taste, then the reaction might not be all that you’ve hoped for. At the same time, there’s no sense in tying yourself to a ring that exceeds your budget, since doing so will cause financial stress that ultimately harms the marriage.

A good engagement ring should be tasteful, and sized appropriately. Bear in mind, however, that you can always get the ring resized later on, if it turns out that it doesn’t fit. At the same time, it might be worth looking through her existing rings, and seeing what the sizes look like.

Adding Personal Touches to the Proposal

Your proposal should ideally feel as though it couldn’t have been made by another person, and that it couldn’t have been made to another person. That means incorporating personal details, and perhaps even involving close friends and family.

Different people will expect, or appreciate, different things from a proposal. It might be that your partner is happy to see familiar faces; it might be that a more intimate, one-to-one proposal is what’s called for. If you understand the person you aspire to marry, you’ll stand a better chance of getting the right results. If you’re in doubt, it’s better to avoid those extremely public proposals – they have the potential to backfire hideously.
