The Greatest Sport: Calcio Fiorentino

We know that fashion is our main subject, but we are also interested in unconventional and different lifestyles. In this article we want to write about one of the most interesting and weirdest sports ever, which is originally from Italy, so here`s everything about

Calcio Fiorentino

Calcio Fiorentino (translated as Florentine Soccer) is an early and bizarre form of football that originated in Italy in the 16th century but is still played today! It is actually a combination of football, rugby and martial arts. When you look at a game of this game though, it looks more like a fist-fight with a ball somewhere. Although it might look like organized chaos, the game has a few rules. These seem not to be important, however, as a game of Calcio Florentino looks like a bunch of players kicking each other and fighting, even though the ball is on the opposite side of the field! There are two teams of 27 who want to beat each other (up). You win points by scoring the ball in the opposite team`s goal. The field is actually a sand pit on which anything goes. Some people join these games just to beat someone up.

There are no breaks, no time-outs and no substitutes! The 50-minute long game is controlled by eight referees. Although it might seem weird, this sport attracts lots of tourists each year in the town of Florence. Sadly (?), there are only four teams and three games each year.

There was a saying: “If you have a taste for power, take your toaster in the shower”; however, now it should be: “take your butt in a Calcio Fiorentino game”.

And, well, needless to say, the clothes are like the sport: a mix of a little Middle Ages and a little of the latest attire in sporting equipment!

P.S. Would you get into a game of CF? Seriously?

Wow, now this is something else! Too bad they don’t do it more often! I guess they need to recuperate a year after such a game1
