The Pros and Cons of makeup for men
Men and makeup are not two words that went together in the 20th century that much, but apparently they did before and they do now as well. Remember all those 1700s European paintings of men with really white faces who were part of aristocratic families? Yes, that was a time men wore a lot of makeup. But makeup has a longer history than that. Just think of all the tribes in the East or the far West who used to paint their faces for holidays or war. Makeup done in that way has more to do with the subject of “mask” than makeup, but it’s still makeup.
Anyway, because more and more men use makeup, we want to give you a quick guide to what good makeup for men is, what you should do and what you shouldn’t. How do we know more and more men wear makeup? Well, just look at the mall at the makeup section. There you can see a lot of products for men.
First of all, let’s get this right: there are so many products for men which don’t qualify as makeup, such as moisturizing creams and lotions, but there are also products designed to make your face look better.
Let’s weigh in the pros and cons of putting makeup on as a man. The pros are that makeup can protect your skin and make it look better and fresh, and the cons are that you need to always be really careful, it’s a thing you are not allowed to go wrong with and the smallest mistake can make it a disaster. We’re not going to weigh in on whether you look better with it or need it, that’s up for you to decide. Also, we need to discuss the fact that at the moment there is still a social stigma in many parts of the world where men who wear makeup are being frowned upon. Of course, this has a lot to do with the conservative views of the past, but there is an increasing openness to it every yea.
Men’s makeup is different from women’s because women have so to speak a uniform face, while men have sideburns and beards. Growing a beard through makeup can be a not very good looking image.
How to apply makeup
So, now we can begin to guiding you to makeup. We believe that if men wear makeup it should be done very subtle and thin, not Adam Lambert style.
1. First of all, the number one step you need to take is to get a perfect shave. Makeup and beards are not a great combination. After that, there are a few steps you need to take in order to get a best-looking makeup.
2. Once you have done that, you need to exfoliate. Use an exfoliant to get rid of all the dirt underneath your skin, rinse and pat with a towel until your face is dry.
3. After that, you can apply moisturizer to make sure your skin won’t dry up. Make sure your moisturizer has completely entered your skin before proceeding to the next step.
4. The first piece of makeup you should use is foundation. Find and use a liquid foundation if you have a bigger area to cover. Some men prefer to stop at this step. You can choose to stop too if you don’t want to become more comfortable, in case you never applied makeup before.
5. After that, apply a concealer. This will cover your blemishes and any other imperfections you might choose to cover with it. When you buy a concealer, you can test it on your wrist and see which color covers your skin in the most natural way. Always make sure the edges are blended well.
6. In order to set your concealer, you have to load a small brush with loose powder that’s very close to your skin tone. You need to pat the powder over every area where you used concealer.
7. Use a powderpuff to cover your whole face with powder. This is not completely necessary, but it can make it all look more uniform.
8. If you want, you can also get lip balm for men. This will not only give your lips a more brighter color, but it can also prevent them from breaking.
9. The very important rule to makeup that you are can’t forget is do not forget to take it off in the evening. Wash, scrub, and whatever you do, take it all off. You can apply moisturizer to make sure your skin won’t dry out.
Tips on choosing your products:
1. Buy products that contain minerals, they are better for you.
2. In case your skin is oily, use a shine-control hydrating lotion.
3. The brushes that usually come when you buy a bronzer are made of cheap plastic, or it comes with a puff sponge and can’t apply powders evenly. Try going to a makeup counter and buy a powder brush. These are very large brushes with soft hairs.
4. For older men with more dry skin, find a really strong moisturizer. Some creams can also help prevent wrinkles, lines etc.
5. You are probably going to have to change you concealer once you get a tan. Always look at for how your skin is changing from season to season.
6. If you are wearing makeup, try not to rub or touch your face. It will rub your makeup off, leaving you with empty spots. Also take care of any clothes that might come in touch with your face. Having dirt on your face can cause acne, and we’re sure you are trying to avoid that.
So, this the quick guide to guy makeup. Don’t forget, if you want to wear makeup, you don’t have to wear it everyday, you can wear it just when you need it, it all depends on what you do and your skin.

There are perhaps more men than I know using make-up. Which is perfectly fine, great that you write about this topic.
Yes, there are many, but it’s still not a wide-spread subject.
This is very true! The concept of men wearing makeup isn’t discussed much, but it is definitely happening. Great post!

Hy! Thank you for your comment and appreciation!
My husband wears BB cream. When my sisters first met him they said he looked more beautiful and perfect than me. Haha.
Thanks for your comment! We’re sure many people will take it as a piece of advice if they are undecided!
I like to apply makeup from time to time, but it’s hard to make it look natural – I guess I’ll keep practicing!
You have a great attitude! Keep doing it, practice makes perfect!
