Choosing the Right Eyebrow Shape for Men (B)

Your eyebrows are one of the very few facial traits which you can easily manipulate to look better and more polished. Your natural eyebrows are a good indicator of what style probably fits you best, but if you take it a step further and refine that look, you will notice that your look will be brighter, cleaner and sharper.

Man Eyebrows

There are many articles on shaping eyebrows available in various publications, but most times they focus on women’s styling. Many men are interested in grooming their eyebrows and in giving them a good shape, but they often find themselves following guidelines that have been put down for women. Shaping men’s eyebrows is different than shaping women’s eyebrows as men have eyebrows that are differently shaped than women’s.

Getting the right shape according to your face type is easy if you know what to look for, which is why we are going to break down the various eyebrow shapes that are commonly suited for men.

When choosing a shape for your eyebrows according to your face shape, remember that you are looking to obtain a balanced look.

Face types

There are four main face types, but many people fall in between two face types. To establish what face type you have, all you need to do is pull your hair back and take a look at your jaw line, your chin and your forehead. Therefore:

Oval faces are very common. Normally, if you have an oval face, your chin is narrower than your forehead. Oval faces usually feature balanced proportions and high cheek bones.

Round faces are characterized by full cheeks and often feature just a few angles. Men with round faces generally have faces that measure the same size in width and in length.

Heart-faces feature broad foreheads and wide cheekbones that narrow to a small chin. Heart faces are also characterized by high cheek bones and narrow jaw lines.

Square faces are described by strong jaw lines, a square chin and a broad forehead. If you have a square face, you will probably find that the width and the length of your face are proportional.

Eyebrow shapes

As we said, there are variations of these face types and therefore, there are variations of what type of eyebrows looks best on you.

To establish how long your eyebrows should be, take a pen and place the tip at the base of your nose. Align the pencil with your inner nostril and inner eye and trace an imaginary line. Then align the pen with your outer nostril, and align the pen with the outer part of your eye. You need to trace two imaginary lines: one going from the base of your nose through the left side of the eye and one through the right side. The points where they cut your natural eyebrows are the points you should use for reference of where your eyebrow should start and where it should end. If you want to have an arch, you can mark the point where the arch will be situated by tracing a line from your inner nostril through the center of your eye. You can mark these three points with a cosmetic pen.

From here, you can start shaping your brows.

Here are the main guidelines when it comes to choosing the best eyebrow shape for your face type. The guidelines are quite general. This is why we encourage you to discover what makes you look best and how you can play with these rules. Adding drama to your face can be easily done by breaking a rule: leaving your eyebrows longer than they should be, adding a more angular arch or keeping your natural fullness are all ways you can take to get a more original look.

1. Oval shapes – Flat Eyebrows

Men with oval faces are the best candidates for flat eyebrows. If you have an oval face, the best thing you can do with your eyebrows is to keep them rather straight. This way, your face will look rounder and more balanced. A flat eyebrow shape is also suited for men who have small eyes. If you pluck all extra hair and keep a little more space between your eyebrows, your eyes will look bigger.

2. Round faces – Angular eyebrows

Men who have round faces look best with eyebrows that feature angles. Guys who tend to have very round faces can benefit from this style, as it will make their eyes stand out and will balance out the roundness of your face. To look natural, go for a soft angular shape when you are plucking your eyebrows.

Angular eyebrows are also suited for men who have smaller foreheads.

3. Heart faces – Slight bends

Men who have heart faces already have angles and curves to their eyebrows, so they can easily work with softer curves and smooth lines. However, if you wish to emphasize your traits, you can always go the other way and add arches to your face, but there is a fine line between rocking it and overdoing it. A slight bend is probably what works best with your features and what will make you stand out from the crowd.

4. Square faces – Round Eyebrows

Round eyebrows are best suited for men who have a wider forehead and large eyes. If you wish to have a round shape, make sure that your eyebrows are in line with your frontal bone and easily taper at the ends. It is very important to remember not give them a sharp round shape. That is a look that is suited for women. Round eyebrows add a delicate vibe to your look and make you appear confident and bold.

Additional information

This guide focuses on choosing the right eyebrow shape for your face type, but we will also give you some tips on how to shape your eyebrows. When you are shaping your eyebrows, try to maintain a natural look. Men who have very sculptural eyebrows look strange and freaky. The technique you use is your choice: plucking and waxing are methods you can easily do alone, but if you choose the threading technique, you might want to ask for some help.

If you are a first-time plucker, it would be best to go to a salon who can teach you how to do it correctly.

In case you decide to do it by yourself and overdo it, an eyebrow pencil of the same color and shade as your brows can come in handy to fill in the gap.

Younger men don’t need as much shaping and older men, so if you are a younger guy you don’t need to shape your eyebrows as often as in the case in which you are an older man.

If you don’t want to shape your eyebrows and prefer to go with your natural shape, we recommend that you brush your eyebrows and remove the long hairs and stray for a polished and clean look.

Remember that using your face shape to establish the shape of your eyebrow is simply a guide and not a rule.
Shaping your eyebrows to your best advantage is a great way to have a good looking face. Well shaped eyebrows will enhance your eyes, will make you look more proportionate and can even highlight your personality.

I’ve noticed many guys have lighter/thinner and arched, or as this article puts it “angular,” brows.. Not much you can do unless you want them even thinner. The best brow shape for most guys is a lower and straighter (slightly slanted) shape, similar to the Efron pic shown here (although he actually is squinting to get that look).

That is not a problem, Biggie, if you have big eyebrows, you can always trim them down a little, that’s the main advantage of having rather big brows! Make sure you always keep them in place!

Arch ’em! It took several visits, but my esthetician was able to figure out how to turn my thick and straight brows into a very nice arched shape, giving me the “exotic sloe eyed look” I was after. Now I see her every 3 weeks for brows and a facial. What a treat!
