When a piece of clothing or an accessory goes really bad, you are probably tempted to throw it away. However, this should not always be the case. Some items can be saved more easily than you’d think with techniques you can do at home with the items you have around.
Discover seven simple tips and tricks that can help you with a very wide array of garments and accessories, which, if put into practice with success can save you a lot of money.
Cover bleach stains with a sharpie
This is definitely an easy trick to put in practice and remember, but what’s tricky about it is that you need to do it very carefully and make sure the color of the sharpie and the color of the garment blend together well. Of course, the spots will be noticeable from up-close, but if you do it right, from afar, your clothes will look good. Doing it wrongly will result in your clothes looking even more stained.
Iron your collars with a hair straightener
Ironing collars can be difficult for some, but you can make it easy by using a hair straightener. The only thing to watch out for is not to overdo it or burn your collars.
Put smelly jeans in the freezer
If your jeans have an odor to them, you should probably give them a good wash. However, you can also put them in the freezer. This will kill off the bacteria without removing their coloring.
Remove red wine with white wine
Don’t whine about it, just open up another bottle of wine. Make it white this time.
All jokes aside, this trick should work, but to test out how your fabrics handle it, try it on a small part first and see how it goes.
Use window spray to clean patent leather
Patent leather is a type of shiny, glossy leather. If a patent leather piece gets dirty, you can remove the stains with window spray. However, make sure you wash or air it afterwards too, so that it doesn’t smell as if you’ve spent the whole day in the detergent aisle in the supermarket.
Clean leather with water and vinegar
Leather in general can be cleaned with a mixture of water and vinegar. Mix the two, place them in a spray bottle and spray the mixture on your shoes or jacket. Make sure to use a cloth to remove the mixture and then, if necessary, wash the garment so that it smells fresh.
Remove oil stains with talcum powder
Should you get oil stains on a shirt or on your pants, you can dust them with some talcum powder, leave it overnight to work and wash it the next day. Be careful when it comes to fine fabrics though.
These hacks are easy to do and take very little time to test. Putting them into practice will make your clothes and accessories wearable rapidly and you will be able to enjoy them again.
And, should they not be completely recoverable, you should always think of ways to transform your garments: cut sleeves, cover with patches, paint them. Clothing and fashion is all about transformation and you should always strive to create style.
