For a few seasons now, Hermès has gotten us used to such stunning collections, that we may very easily start taking them for granted. With their spring-summer 2018 menswear collection, the brand has opened the door to a new world of beauty and sublime. The strange part is that the ease with which Hermès creates clothes seems so strong that you start seeing the clothes as being a part of nature. Véronique Nichanain, who signed the collection, offered a stunning collection that is bold, yet easy on the eye and extremely balanced.
Vogue wrote about the collection: “Show it to a fashion expert and he or she will likely fall back in ecstasy (…).” And we have. The proportions are right, the stitching is beautiful, the torso-slimming illusions, the sharp cuts and the calm, deep colors, are fall into place. The colors, mostly burgundy, are exquisite in terms of shade. Hermès uses burgundy almost as a neutral, which is the new discovery in fashion.
The reason why this collection works, on top of everything else, is because it speaks both to men who love fashion, but not necessarily love the strange part of it and to fashion insiders, who see it as a true work of value.
The clothes from the Hermès spring 2018 menswear collection look worked on, but not highly processed. There is a simplicity about them take is very soothing and relaxing and that feels like a breath of fresh air in the current fashion landscape. Nichanian described the collection very well as “sophisticated letting go”.
The collection, consisting of many sporty clothes, but also of more elegant items including a black chiffon crocodile jacket, is very young, but can be worn by men of all ages, which is a rare talent that Nichanian obviously possesses. Some of the pieces of the collection were made from a patented fabric called Toilbright, which has the glossy sheen of a foil candy wrapper. This gave a very interesting effect to the clothes in the bright light of the runway.
Hermès has, once again, taken us on a wonderful journey that luckily is accessible and can make its way into your closet and on the streets. We definitely appreciate their push for a more sophisticated, yet restraint version of fashion, which is what the menswear world needs a lot of.
